Debate on International Terrorism and Criminal

The European Movement in Serbia (EminS) and the Forum for South Eastern Europe - photograph from the event (no. 1) Zurich, organized a public debate on "International Criminal and Terrorism" on July 18th at the Intercontinental hotel in Belgrade.

Professor Albert Stahel from the University of Zurich held a lecture presenting a comprehensive analysis of global organized crime, types of criminal activity, key organizations, and the various routes for the smuggling of drugs, weapons, illegal immigrants, human trafficking and money laundering.

He pointed out that the Chinese tirades, the Japanese jakuzy the Italian mafia, the Russian and Caucasus gangs, the Kurdish clans, as well as the Columbian and Mexican cartels for photograph from the event (no. 2) narcotics production and trade are playing a major role in organized criminal activities. In addition, he elaborated on the connections and ways of co-operation between the world centers of organized crime. According to professor Stahel, these centers earn $400 billion annually from drug trafficking, $5, 5 billion from cigarettes smuggling, while simultaneously laundering thousands of millions of US dollars each year.

Mr. Marko Nicevic, vice-president of the International Antinarcotics Board and former high-level member of the Serbian police, contributed to the debate with a detailed presentation of the various activities of the Albanian mafia, which is said to be responsible for 70% of the criminal activities in Soho, London. He explained that, due to the fact that drug production, transit and sale are done by closed family circles, the fight against and infiltration into the Albanian mafia is very difficult.

photograph from the event (no. 3)Dr Vojin Dimitrijevic, professor at the University of Belgrade and member of the Forum for International Relations, spoke about terrorism, emphasizing that a difference should be made between political murders and terrorism. He believes that the aim of the September 11th attacks was not to achieve a high toll of civilian casualties but to attack the symbols of American imperialism.

Vuk Boskovic, counselor for security for the Montenegrin president, presented the body of measures taken by the Montenegrin government against criminal activities on both the legal and the operational level.
