This week, MEPs will take part in the first plenary session of the year, focusing on issues such as the EU’s vaccines strategy, gender equality, the political situation in the US, and the priorities of the Portuguese Council Presidency. Meanwhile, the European Commission is expected to adopt its strategy for strengthening Europe’s economic and financial sovereignty this week. On Thursday, EU leaders will convene for a summit to assess the health crisis and the EU’s vaccination programme, and on Sunday, Portugal will hold presidential elections.

European ParliamentOn Tuesday morning, MEPs are to discuss the current status of the EU vaccines strategy for COVID-19. On Wednesday, Parliament has tabled a vote on the 2019 report on Human Rights and Democracy in the World and the EU’s response. On Wednesday, debates on the current political situation in the US and on the presentation of the programme of the Portuguese Presidency are scheduled. Votes on several reports of the FEMM-Committee are tabled later on this week, including on the gender perspective in the Covid-19 crisis, the EU Strategy for Gender Equality, and women’s participation in the digital economy.
