The European Movement in Serbia strongly condemns the escalation of hate speech and ethnically motivated nationalist rhetoric, as well as the violent behavior of groups and individuals closely aligned with the authorities. Such actions further exacerbate the already deteriorated state of public dialogue, as evidenced by the recent disturbing incidents in the National Assembly.

The European Movement emphasizes the responsibility of public authorities for the negative atmosphere in society, the spread of intolerance, and various forms of violent conduct. These are direct consequences of the ruling party’s approach to managing state institutions and its influence over government-controlled media.

The European Movement calls on public prosecutors to take decisive action against unlawful practices that incite national hatred, including the recent primitive and chauvinistic attacks on MP Marinika Tepić.

The European Movement reminds of the provisions of the Constitution of Serbia, particularly the article that states: “The Republic of Serbia is a state based on the rule of law and social justice, principles of civic democracy, human and minority rights and freedoms, and commitment to European principles and values.”

European values, among other principles, include “respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law, and respect for human rights, including the rights of persons belonging to minorities.
